Created in 2016, the homegrown app Spiking’s main purpose is to break down barriers in trading and investing by allowing app users to follow and mirror investment moves of credible and sophisticated investors.
These investors are classified as “Blue Whales”, Millionaires and Billionaires. “Blue Whales” are verified investors that have accumulated more than SGD2 million in total net personal assets or make at least SGD 300,000.00 a year.
Coming from a field that is totally unrelated to investment and trading, looking at those figures and data makes me dizzy. It seems almost impossible to read, much less internalize these details and I would never in a million years see myself voluntarily doing my research on the stock market. I wouldn’t even know where to start!
When I heard about Spiking I was really curious and unable to fathom how an app like that would work, and since it is free, I decided to download to check it out.
I was pleasantly surprised at how data and information has been cleverly formatted and designed for consumption for the common man. Essentially, the app felt like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tinder for investors.
Going through the app, here are some things I found extremely helpful for an impatient and confused beginner like me.
Under the first tab — ‘Trades’ (as seen in the image below), the app shows you transactions of sophisticated investors, much like instagram’s explore page. These prompts help introduce me to big name investors that I’ve never heard before and track their trading moves. Furthermore, the bigger the pool of investors, the wider the range of business you are exposed to which means a greater diversity in your investment opportunities!
Under the second tab — “Best Stocks”, quite self explanatory, sifts out the stocks with better performances and thus, greater potential for investment. What is so brilliant is how straightforward and easy the information is conveyed to the app user. Developed like tinder, a card with the company name and logo is displayed together with information about the stock movement in this case +0.2 (0.36%) in green.
Clicking on the card leads you to a comprehensive page of information about the stock you are interested in. The 6 sections comprise of: an interactive chart — a graph showing stock movements.
Company information — an overview of the nature of the business.
Spikes — information such as the last stock price movements. Top shareholders of the company and their profiles. Buy and sell, showing “Blue Whale” investor’s activities in the stock. Lastly, news and social, displaying news articles relevant and relating to the particular company, I find this section exceptionally useful because being able to tally market movements with recent news such as political laws or geographic factors allows you to see the correlation between real life events that affect market movements.
It is also a great way to keep up to date and understand a particular company you might be interested to invest in. Just like Tinder, swiping left indicates that you are uninterested while swiping right allows you to engage in a paper trade. This system helps greatly in your research for the company you’d like to invest in. Even by swiping and familiarising yourself with names of certain big companies will helps you ease into this topic in a fun way.
As someone who is new to the field, this app has certainly helped me learn much more about the crypto market and its players with much ease. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media platform, discovering the Spiking app is definitely a more efficient use of time and attention.
